Domain Development
By ABIGAIL of Cashvally.com

If you are earning money simply by parking a domain, why would you want to develop it? Are you crazy? Domain parking is dull, the whole purpose of a name is to host a fully operational website, not just a peppering of text ads... Domain development is the new buzz word being thrown around the domain name industry at the moment. As major search engines cut advertising revenues to their partners, domainers are starting to turn their backs on domain-parking to focus on development, all hail the true value of domain names...the time, money and effort which is spent evolving them into their true potential.

You only have to look at the prices that strong, generic names are still achieving to understand that the true value lies within the perceived development potential of that domain; the fact that many generic names do not actually get developed is disappointing, however it is nice to see more and more domainers are putting on their creative hats and taking domaining to the next level. So what determines whether you should develop a domain name you currently own or just keep it parked?

Well, I believe its down to the person who owns the domain, and whether their creative juices and passion about domain names extends beyond simple monetisation. I like to look at the industry in the similar light to the property market. Its great to own a piece of land, and make money just by sitting on it and waiting for natural appreciation to take place. Or you might rent that piece of land out to generate a monthly income, but really the exciting part is taking that piece of land, creating a property to build on it and actually doing it.

Take adsenselover.com and the story of Warren Royal, he did exactly that. Took a domain, developed it from a piece of land into a wonderful internet property and in doing so broke out of the domain-parking mould and into a world of freedom and I'm sure much more satisfaction. You can read about his story in the December 2008 cover story on dnjournal.com a great site about the name industry. I think it is clear which side of the fence I sit on but why not let yourself decide,

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with parking domains in fact domain-parking is a very good business model however I'd like to think that next-generation domainers will take the view that the key to unlocking a domain names full and, quite frankly, vast potential value is by development.
